This program combines instruction in high school and at Centennial College and provides a Cooperative Education placement usually at an elementary school. It is offered in Semester 2 and is open to students in their graduating year.

As a Child and Youth Worker, you encourage change in children and youth who are experiencing a range of learning, social, emotional, or behavioural challenges in their lives. As a Child and Youth Worker specialist, you work in schools and hospitals or in residential, institutional, or community-based settings.

To qualify, YOU must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age and in your graduating year
  • Have at least 26 credits
  • Have an interest in working with children with social and emotional challenges
  • Be in good academic standing, including completion of all compulsory courses
    required for your Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Be in your final semester of Grade 12
  • Be willing to attend Centennial College and a Cooperative Education placement in Semester 2

Candidates will be interviewed by a selection committee which includes industry partners. A limited number of spaces are available.

Program components include:

  • One week at the student’s home school for pre-placement orientation in Cooperative Education
  • One week at Centennial College for an introductory module entitled “What is a Child and Youth Worker?”
  • A Cooperative Education placement in an educational setting where students assist children with special needs in the classroom and support children with daily living activities
  • One day per week at Centennial College to continue their apprenticeship in-school training

While taking your in-school training at Centennial College, you will learn the following:

  • Module One (30 hours) – “What is a Child and Youth Worker?”
  • Module Two (34 hours) – Child Care Tech One
  • Module Three (32 hours) – Interpersonal Skill Development
  • Module Four (16 hours) – Integrated Seminar

Program Credits/Certification:

  • Earn 4 high school credits towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Earn 3 college credits towards a Child and Youth Worker Certificate of Apprenticeship
