This program combines instruction in high school and at Seneca College and provides a Cooperative Education placement in the education sector. It is offered in Semester 2 and is open to students in their graduating year.
As an Early Childhood Educator, you love to work with people, in particular, young children. You enjoy the challenge of teaching children from a variety of different learning backgrounds.
To qualify, YOU must:
- Be at least 16 years of age and in your graduating year
- Have at least 26 credits
- Have a keen interest in working with children in an educational setting
- Be in good academic standing, including completion of all compulsory courses required for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma
- Be in your final semester of Grade 12
- Be enrolled full time in a Cooperative Education course in Semester 2
- Be willing to attend Seneca College (every Thursday) and your work placement within the GTA
Candidates will be interviewed by a selection committee which includes industry partners. A limited number of spaces are available.
Program components include:
For Grade 12 students during semester two in their graduating year:
• First 2 weeks at your home school for pre-placement orientation
• Week three – Cooperative Education placement as an ECE apprentice begins:
– Mondays (select) return to your Home school
– Fridays (all) attend Seneca College
– Module One (42 hours) – Child Development 1
– Module Two (42 hours) – Pre-School Learning Environments 1
– Module Three (42 hours) – Pre-school Learning Environments 1 (PRACTICUM)
During your placement you will practice the following competencies from your
Training Standards Booklet:
- Develop professional practices
- Screen children for exceptionalities
- Create an interactive environment
- Access community resources
- Plan adaptive programs
- Support, share and advocate
After Graduation you may continue to work full-time as a registered Early Childhood
Educator Apprentice and MUST secure employment as an ECE in one of the following
areas:
- Daycare Centres
- School settings
- Publishing companies
- Camps for young children
- Hospitals
Program Credits/Certification:Upon successfully completing the program, you will:
- Earn 4 credits in Semester 2 of your Grade 12 year from the Toronto Catholic
District School Board
- Earn 3 college credits towards an Early Childhood Educator Certificate of
Apprenticeship
